By the Numbers: 2023 NYC Marathon Training · Week 12

Data & GraphsNYC MarathonRunningTraining Logs

So uh… it’s RACE WEEK? In my infinite wisdom, I registered for the Tree House Half Marathon, taking place just days after coming off the road from the US Open. It was the whole reason I decided to do a 19-week run up to the marathon, as opposed to the 16-week cycle I did in 2022. I generally like to have a 12-week lead up to the half marathon distance, so I started early.

Unfortunately, Tree House turned into a logistical clusterfuck, so I pivoted once I learned that my running coach, Joanna, was going to be at a smaller half in CT in support of her son who was also running the race. Instead of heading to MA, I instead hopped in the car, drove down to the shore and did my best to ‘race’.

2023 Golden Lights Half Marathon: How did it go?

Spoiler: Not so well. Should’ve known it would go sideways when I split my pants during the shakeout run that I delayed to the 1pm the day before. It was hot, and the race organizers hadn’t clearly communicated that part of the race would be taking part along the beach on dirt and sand.

I decided to wear my super shoes for this race (Saucony Endoprhin Pro 3), which have a pretty high stack. Pair that with an unstable beach surface and you’ve got a perfect recipe for a rolled ankle, which I managed to tick off on my bingo card during the first mile. Cool cool cool.

I did my best to push the pace for a bit, but it ultimately wasn’t any sort of workout I was proud of. I’ve run worse races, but I’ve also run far better.

Week 12 of 19: Overview

Otherwise, I was happy to wrap up my time at the US Open earlier in the week. Structure is great, but it’s always nice to get back on the horse and ride at your own speed… and wait until the sun is up before heading out for your run.
