Pushing Pause

The date stamp on my last post makes it pretty obvious, it’s been tough to feel the blogging mojo lately. It seems so trivial to be taking to the interwebs to ooh and ahh over the latest lululemon when everything else in the world seems, for the lack of a better term… fucked.

But what if it’s not? Maybe 2020 is the intervention we all needed, because we all got too comfortable in our own bubbles to pay any attention to what was going on outside of them. Getting uncomfortable is necessary for positive change to take place, without it we’re all doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

I’ve been having a good amount of offline conversations, and the collective feeling of exhaustion is apparent. In this sociopolitical climate, nobody agrees on anything. As a human race… we can’t even all agree that the earth is round. I’m surprised someone hasn’t come out with a conspiracy theory yet that gravity is a hoax.

Can we at least all agree on a pretty sunset?

Even if there’s something the vast majority agrees on (like oh hi racism’s gotta go, why is it even still a thing), there’s ALWAYS someone down in the comments/replies who argues the opposite. It can feel like your brain is short circuiting to even TRY to understand where that other side is coming from, especially when a simple concept of equal rights is just that in your mind, a very simple concept.

Where are my 5FD & WMTM Alerts?

There are so many things in this world that matter more than a new color of Align Pants, or that damn Court Purple Swiftly. Lululemon has taken a step back to create space for more meaningful communications and asked us, as lululemon influencers, to take pause and do the same.

This email came through last week, when I was sitting there exhausted from my day, trying and failing to come up with the energy to write about upload. I admittedly felt a little bit of “umm wait what you can’t tell me what to do” like a toddler when I first read it, but after I screwed my head on straight, it made sense.

Email to lululemon collective: 6/4/20

I admittedly struggled with the same feeling of “this blog seems trivial” at the beginning of COVID lockdown, as unemployment began to skyrocket. Who am I to talk about expensive clothes like it’s NBD when so many people out in the world were suddenly questioning their ability to cover their monthly bills?

Yet, I kept posting because I was reminded by someone close to me that not all blogs need to be news outlets, and often times people read AthletiKaty not for the clothing itself, but for the commentary. For the entertainment, for the dad jokes. An escape from the weight of this weird ass world we live in.

As I sat down to write this post, I thought it was going to be a short little “hi I’m still here and just b/c I haven’t turned this platform into a library of resources on how humanity can do better doesn’t mean I don’t care and OBTW I am going to keep posting with regularity because y’all come here for entertainment and not news.”

I don’t regularly post about my full-time job or personal life online, so maybe it seems like I have my shit together. But, these last few months of lockdown have taxed me of every ounce mental and emotional energy I can muster. While it seems like AthletiKaty is doing reasonably well, Katy (the person) needs a break.

So, while the lack of posting in the last week or so has been the product of my inability to muster the inspiration to do so, for the following week I’m going to respect lululemon’s request, and be back to business as usual with 6/23’s upload.

I’m not gone, I just need some time. To read, to rest, to educate myself. I’m pushing pause.
