Review: Lululemon Low Key Tank

lululemonReviews

The weather is *finally* starting to turn the corner here in the northeast, and this means that open back shirt season is back! In past seasons, lululemon’s Back Up Long LS, If You’re Lucky LS and the Var-City Tank have gotten plenty of rotation in my casual lineup.

Recently, lululemon released the Low Key Tank, and with its conservative front and open back, I found it hard to resist. So I went out and bought it. 🙂

Review: Lululemon Low Key Tank ($44)

First off, this isn’t a technical tank. Therefore, if you sweat in it, you’ll be damp for a while. It’s that thicker fabric that lulu’s used in the Superb Tank, which also comes a bit faded from the get-go.

You can do yoga in it. (Not the hot kind.)

If tree pose isn’t your deal, try doing your best rock star pose. Mine needs some work.

As you can see, it looks a lot smaller on me than it does the models on lululemon’s website. Their blurbs claim 99x out of 100 that the models are always 5’9″ and wearing a size 6. In reality, they all would probably grab a 4 off the rack if they were out shopping on their own.

Well, I’m 5’9″ and wearing a TTS 8 in these photos, according to a measuring tape and lululemon’s size chart. If you’re looking to get lost in this tank to achieve the same drapey vibe as the website, try your TTS and one size up to see which you like best.

I love how simple the design is in front. Because the fun of your outfit is in back, you don’t want to overdo it in front. This is perfect to add a necklace or fun earrings to take this baby out for a summer happy hour.

C’mon though, while the front is great, the reason most of us have bought (or will buy) this tank is the open back. This is the time to grab your jazziest lululemon bra for a pop of fun in the back!

One caveat is that the top of the neckhole can fall right around where the criss-cross of the bra you choose may be. On the left, you can see that the fun of the Run: Stuff Your Bra that I had initially chosen gets a little lost. You may run into this same issue with a Free to Be Wild. On the right, the Energy Bra seems to capture a bit more attention without being too obnoxious.

Therefore, the Energy Bra will be my go-to for layering under this tank for any of its many future outings. I tried it on in store with an Invigorate Bra, and it just didn’t work. Too much fabric, not enough skin.

It was 80 yesterday, and now it’s back down in the cloudy 50’s, so I’m going to have to put this one back on the shelf for a little bit longer. However, I CANNOT WAIT to wear more of this tank when the sun (hopefully, eventually) comes out again. 🙂

  1. I was so excited for this top, but in both my TTS and a size down (I’m petite) it was so ugly and boxy from the front. The bad is SO GOOD, but I couldn’t get over the lackluster fit in front. 🙁

  2. This review is super-helpful (as are the photos), but it’s almost *too* helpful as I’m trying not to buy stuff right now! 🙂 I’m going to keep my eye on this over the next few weeks and if it’s still around, I might give in to the temptation.

    1. Isn’t it funny how when you WANT to spend $, nothing catches your eye… but the minute you decide you should slow the spending, cute things happen? #whompwhomp
